What Is the TUG Test?

The Timed Up and Go test evaluates a sequence of everyday functional movements. During a standard TUG assessment, the participant typically begins seated in a chair. On instruction, the person stands up, walks a short predetermined distance, turns around, walks back to the chair, and sits down again.

The total time required to complete the task is recorded.

Although the test appears simple, it involves several important components of functional mobility, including:

Why Use Multiple TUG Trials?

Performance during a mobility test can vary from one attempt to another. A person may be unfamiliar with the procedure during an initial attempt, while fatigue, pain, attention, footwear, assistive devices, or testing conditions may also influence performance.

Recording multiple trials, when appropriate for the selected protocol, can provide more than one data point. An average can help summarize the recorded results mathematically.

Why TUG Times Cannot Always Be Compared Directly

Clinical perspective: Two people may record the same TUG time while performing very differently. One person may move slowly but steadily, while another may complete the test more quickly but show difficulty during turning, standing, or sitting down. How Should TUG Results Be Interpreted?

A TUG result should always be interpreted in context. A single time value does not provide a complete picture of a person’s health, mobility, balance, or risk of falling.
